No matter how used you were to something, surprises always happened. Even though Annie had grown up in a world of being rushed to hospitals, it still came as a shock when she got the damned phone call. It had been nearly one in the morning when her cell phone rang, and then, her whole world was sent upside down again.
Kate had called to tell her that their cousin had been sent to the hospital again. Although she had relapsed, she had been doing reasonably good for a relapse. But now, their spiral downward had begun.
She had snapped her phone shut and quite literally fell out of bed in her rush (damn the blankets for getting caught around her legs), as Colton was coming to get her: He drove fast in the first place, though if it was concerning his sister, he would be speeding faster than ever. So, getting completely dressed was out of the question. So, she simply pulled on a pair of jeans, which were, much to her annoyance, rather tight and took a few minutes to get on. She would’ve reached for another pair, but that was out of the question–she didn’t have time to find another pair. Thankfully, she had been wearing a camisole to bed (thank you, built-in-bra) and only had to grab her purse and cell phone when he honked the horn.
The car ride there had been completely silent. Annie had tried to prompt her cousin into talking, though he hadn’t responded. He simply stared straight ahead at the road, driving faster than he had in years. She had given up after a while and simply curled up (she didn’t do seatbelts) and fell asleep again. The next she knew, she was waking up in the hospital waiting room and the sun was out. She blinked up at her cousin, who managed a nod for her, and she sat up and stretched. “How did I get in here?” She mumbled, absently rubbing her eyes, thankful for the fact that she didn’t have make-up on for the moment. “I don’t remember walking in..”
“I carried you,” Colton said, with a simple shrug. “You’re not heavy, and you were tired. Figured I’d let you sleep a little more.” Besides, he carried her around a lot and was used to it..And jeez, just look at his muscles.
It seemed that some of the nursing staff were, indeed, doing just that. They kept coming over and asking if he was alright, and Annie had to stifle her giggles. She knew her older cousin was attractive, but hot damn, these girls were ridiculous.
He yawned, stretching for the moment (the nurses were probably hoping the dark green shirt would ride up to reveal more of his muscular physique, but they were disappointed) before running a hand through dark brown locks. They were already in a casual disarray, as was normal for him when his hair was long enough to be like that. She absently reached up to flatten them, and met his dark brown eyes with her hazel, offering a quick smile for his benefit. She noted that his hoodie was gone, and then noticed she was wearing it. Aw, he was sweet. Sometimes.
Their conversation was pointless and just wasted time, and that was all that they had wanted. And, of course, it was in Spanish (they didn’t need eaves droppers, after all). She was filled in on the minor details that he knew, and was about to ask more when the doctor interrupted them. They were pulled aside into Juno’s room, with Colton’s parents and any other family that was there. Annie slipped inside the bathroom, though left the door open so she could hear; washing her face and quickly putting on some eyeliner.
“Things aren’t good,” came his voice, and Colton felt his stomach knot. His eyes flickered towards his sister, unconscious (probably medically-induced) on her bed, covered in wires and breathing so faintly it terrified him. However, the this was a sight he was used to, as much as it pained him to see her like that. He tore his eyes away a moment later, as he had kind of zoned out and hadn’t been listening to the doctor. He did now, and paid closer attention than a man of twenty should be able to.
“Her kidneys are basically shot.” Colton felt his hands clench into fists and he did his best to keep from gritting his teeth. “Dialysis is going to be useless in a few weeks. All in all, I’m very sorry, but the inevitable is coming and it’s coming rather quickly.” He even knew what the inevitable was.
“So there’s no chance?” He managed to ask, thankful that his voice didn’t break. “None at all?”
“Well, there is a chance with a donor, but–,” he didn’t get to tell them but what, as a loud crash echoed from the bathroom, followed by a slightly muffled “FUCK!”
Colton, being the closest and the quickest, had been the first one to entered the bathroom, and stopped short at the sight of bloodied pieces of glasses shattered on the floor. And there was his cousin, bleeding heavily from her left hand, cursing quickly and terribly under her breath in both Spanish and English.
“What the hell happened?!” Her older cousin said, moving closer and taking the bleeding hand in his. He went to poke at the glass sticking out of the wound, but she simply winced and tugged it back.
“I got mad and punched the closest thing to me,” she said, feeling her hands start to shake. Oh, hell no. Not this. Tears were stinging behind her eyes, both angry and upset. “Which just so happened to be the mirror. I uhm, I have to go smoke.” Shitty excuse, but she had to get out of there, or a very large wolf would be taking up the majority of the tiny bathroom.
“What? No.” He tugged her back by the arm attached to her good hand. “Annie, shit, I think you need stitches, and you definitely need to get–,”
“I’ll be fine!” And with that, she shook him off and practically ran out of the room and down the hall to the elevator, snatching some gauze off the nurse’s cart and heading outside once the elevator doors opened.
She kept true to her word, lighting up a cigarette immediately. It calmed her down and kept her from phasing, but the tears still wanted to come. She felt a dull ache in her hand and looked down, cursing when she noticed that the skin had healed over.
Over the goddamn glass.
“Mierda,” she cursed, grimacing as she poked at her hand, wincing visibly when the glass rubbed against the skin from the inside. She had no idea what the hell to do, and thus, after she finished her cigarette, pulled out her cell phone. She scrolled through her contacts, and finally, found the person she was looking for. She quickly hit ‘send’ when she hit Sam’s number, and waited for him to answer or for her to get the voicemail.
Colton watched her go, and grimaced. Well, that was going to be a fun mess to clean up later. He frowned a little to himself and excused himself from the room, unable to take any more. His parents would tell him the important stuff later. He resisted the urge to punch the wall right outside her room, especially after watching his cousin do something similar.
He hated this. He just wanted a normal family for once. But that was never going to fucking happen.
