At least 15% of Americans will suffer from major depression during their life. Kate Crow will tell you this, as she likes to ramble of statistics about things, especially to her bad-habit prone little sister. But while Kate loves to know about medical care and the numbers involved with it, she knows that particular fact for a different reason; her psychiatrist told her in an effort to make her feel more comfortable with what she was experiencing. But it didn’t really, unfortunately. In fact, nothing made her comfortable with how she felt.
How did she feel? Horrible. Miserable. Like nothing mattered anymore. She had been walking through the past two years in a daze, not really comprehending or enjoying anything around her. She had almost failed her last year of college because of it, and barely graduated. It was why she was here, in La Push, in an internship instead of a real job.
You would think taking care of her sister (especially her sister) would give Kate a stronger personality, but if anything, it just made her more withdrawn from the world. It didn’t even branch off from her mother’s death. All her life Kate had been a complete push-over, shy and quiet. She had had friends, but college had made it hard to keep in touch. It was in her junior year of college when her sister moved in that made her realize how alone she was; she had no one to call to share the news with. That was pretty much the day that Kate broke. It’s not that she didn’t feel anything. It was that she didn’t put any effort into feeling anything. It didn’t seem to matter to her, what anyone said or what anyone did. The only driving force in her life was her sister, making sure she didn’t kill herself with a stupid stunt. The only time Kate really showed any real emotion was when she was yelling at Annie, who would then proclaim to hate her. Well, she wasn’t all that happy with herself either.
Appearance;
Being Native American, Irish, and Latin made Kate have a rather diverse look. She had the tanner skin of her mother, the light eyes of her father, and shared both of their dark hair. She didn’t really care about her appearance; the only self-pampering she managed to achieve was the basic routine of showering and brushing. She didn’t like to wear make-up, as she only ended up smudging it anyways.
She had a pretty smile, but she didn’t smile much, so no one really got to admire it. She ate healthy and worked out (it was supposed to make her feel better, the endorphins, but it only made her feel more tired) and the affect was an average body, not overweight, not underweight, just about in the middle. She slept a lot but never really felt the affects, leaving bruised bags under her eyes. Not the most attractive look.
At work she wears the required scrubs, and at home it’s not much different. She looks to feel comfortable, so she just throws on some sweats. She’ll wear a nice skirt and put her hair up only for church, which she ended up going to every Sunday, usually alone. Her sister was only interested in going when she could make a joke out of it, so she often left Kate at home. She liked church; everyone was friendly and it was the only place where she genuinely smiled.

History;
Kate doesn’t have the best memory, so she doesn’t recall most of her childhood. She looks happy enough in pictures, so she figures it was nice enough. Her parents never fought, as far as she could remember, and she and her younger sister got along fine. She had a few boyfriends in high school, and average grades, but she didn’t know what she wanted to do with her life. It was a question bugging her constantly, but then she figured it out. She wanted to be a nurse. That revelation was mostly caused by her mother’s diagnosis of breast cancer. The months following the announcement were tedious, and when her mom passed away, it got even worse. It was like someone flipped a switch inside her family, like they now had the excuse to act as horribly as they could. Annie started smoking (the little idiot) and her father yelled a lot. Kate, however, maintained a level head. She missed her mother, and felt her absence every day, but to her it was no excuse to start acting like a beheaded chicken or something like that.
Then she went off to college, which was a wonderful escape from her home life. She got fair grades and enjoyed throwing herself into learning. She met a lot of great people (but stopped talking to them), had a lot of fun (but felt most of the time like she was watching other people having a good time rather than having a good time herself), but it all came crashing down on her when he sister showed up at her door, suitcase in hand. She felt bad, really bad, for leaving her sister with her father for all those years, so she took her in.
Life after that was a lot of the same. The only new developments in her life was the weekly meeting with Dr. Everett and moving to Forks to start her internship, only there was an unexpected surprise. When she told her father she was moving there he revealed that her mother had left a piece of land in La Push, where the Quilette tribe lived. Apparently her mother’s parents had been part of the Hoh tribe, a smaller division of the Quilettes. It was nice to have a place to live while she finished her internship. Upon hearing the news, she felt pretty happy. Moving to La Push was like turning a new leaf over. Now, if only she could stop feeling like shit, and it would be perfect.
